The real wall
The CDL for linemen
A Class A commercial driver’s license is the biggest thing standing between most applicants and an interview. You can’t cram for it, and most programs want it in hand before they’ll talk to you.

| Program | CDL rule | Permit OK? |
|---|---|---|
| SELCAT | Class A with air brakes for overhead and underground. No permits, for any program. | No |
| ALBAT | Class A with air brakes, OR a Class A temporary permit with air brakes plus your driver’s license. Must be valid when you apply and when you’re selected. | Yes |
| Cal-Nev | A valid, unrestricted commercial driver’s license (the class isn’t stated on the page). | Not stated |
| Mo Valley | Class A with air brakes AND manual transmission, held in one of 17 listed states, plus a DOT physical. If you’re under 21 and your CDL is from a different state than the one you applied for, you have 60 days to get a CDL in that state. | Not stated |
| MSLCAT | Class A with no restrictions. Permits NOT accepted. DOT medical certification and a driving record from within 30 days. | No |
| NEAT | Class A OR Class B with air brakes; “M” endorsement if you live in New York. | Not stated |
| NW Line | Class A with no E restriction (so not restricted to automatic transmission). | Not stated |
| SWLCAT | Class A required to interview, no permit. A manual-transmission restriction must be removed within 120 days of indenture. | No |
The catches
- Air brakes. SELCAT, ALBAT, Mo Valley and NEAT name the air brake endorsement. Test in a vehicle with air brakes or you’ll get a restriction.
- Manual transmission. Mo Valley requires manual; NW Line wants no E restriction, meaning you took your skills test in a manual (an automatic-only test gets you an E restriction); SWLCAT gives you 120 days after indenture to remove a manual restriction.
- DOT medical card. SELCAT, Mo Valley, MSLCAT, SWLCAT and NEAT all require a DOT physical or medical certificate.
- No permits at SELCAT, MSLCAT or SWLCAT. ALBAT is the only program that says a Class A temporary permit with air brakes plus your license counts; the others don’t say.
- Class B is stated as acceptable only at NEAT (Cal-Nev says “commercial” without a class), with an “M” endorsement if you live in New York.
Utilities and line schools
Utilities are often more flexible on timing. Ameren requires a Class A permit (the written test) before your first day and the license within six months. Northwest Lineman College requires you to “be eligible to obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license.”
Getting it
Under federal Entry-Level Driver Training rules, you complete theory and behind-the-wheel training with a registered provider before the Class A skills test. The written knowledge tests (general knowledge, air brakes, combination vehicles) are given by your state’s DMV. Mountain States publishes its own step-by-step CDL guide.
