Short, posted windows

When Mo Valley opens lineman applications, they open at 8 a.m. on the open date and close at 4 p.m. on the close date. When we checked, lineman was “Currently CLOSED” with no date posted. Have your CDL, DOT physical, diploma and the $30 fee ready before the day, not after.

The test: ETA, on-site

Mo Valley states it plainly: “Pass the ETA aptitude test administered on-site.” It covers reading comprehension and algebra, and a minimum passing score gets you to the interview. The number isn’t published. Mo Valley’s study guide notes that many apprenticeship programs get four, five, six or more times as many applicants as openings. What the ETA test covers.

Direct entry from Midwest Line College

Mo Valley runs Midwest Line College, a 13-week pre-apprenticeship that offers an “opportunity for direct entry” into the apprenticeship. It is the only program we found that runs its own line school with direct entry; MSLCAT’s standards also allow direct entry for recognized pre-apprenticeship programs.

Which states?

Mo Valley’s map shows seven states: South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Missouri and Minnesota. Its CDL rule, though, accepts licenses from 17 states. We couldn’t reconcile the two, so if you live outside the seven, ask before you apply.

What the job pays

Union journeyman lineman rates in Mo Valley’s states come from federal prevailing-wage determinations, which adopt the local union’s negotiated rate. We couldn’t find an apprentice pay ladder Mo Valley publishes in readable form.
