Line school: do you need it?

Line school teaches climbing, rigging and the basics before you’re hired, and some employers prefer it. But most union programs don’t publish any credit for it. Here’s what they do publish.

What the union programs say about school

  • Cal-Nev: an ETA-approved line school of at least 400 hours earns a priority interview. A clear published rule.
  • Mo Valley: its own Midwest Line College offers an “opportunity for direct entry.”
  • MSLCAT: completed pre-apprenticeship programs the committee recognizes may qualify for a direct interview or direct entry.
  • SELCAT: asks you to submit line college certificates and transcripts if you want them considered. No point value published.
  • SWLCAT: each subcommittee decides whether to grant credit.
  • NW Line, NEAT, ALBAT: no published credit rule for commercial line schools.

When school makes sense

  • You’re aiming at Cal-Nev or Mo Valley, where school has a published payoff.
  • You’re targeting co-ops or contractors, which lean on line school graduates more than written tests.
  • You’ve never climbed and want to know you can before you commit years to it.

When to skip it, for now

  • Your program publishes no credit for it, and you can get groundman work instead: hours count at ALBAT, Mo Valley, MSLCAT, NW Line and Cal-Nev.
  • You don’t have your CDL yet. That’s the gate most programs check first. CDL rules.
