What’s in the official practice
EEI’s CAST-R practice document (2020) contains:
- Graphic Arithmetic: one drawing followed by 8 questions, suggested time 15 minutes.
- Mechanical Concepts: 26 questions, suggested time 12 minutes.
- Reading for Comprehension: 24 questions, suggested time 23 minutes.
- Work Preferences Inventory: no practice. EEI says it doesn’t provide practice for tests of work style and behavior.
EEI suggests setting aside a continuous two-hour block and notes the practice tests are “for informational purposes only, and are not a guarantee that an applicant will pass.” Take them timed, once, as a baseline, then again after you’ve worked on what you missed. Mechanical concepts is the section with the least margin: the real test gives about 27 seconds a question.
